Dispatch & Freight Management

Can Owner-Operators Dispatch Themselves?

Yes. An owner-operator can choose to handle their own dispatch when it is legally and operationally appropriate for their business. Many do it successfully. It does add administrative work on top of driving, which is why some choose outside support.

What self-dispatch may involve

  • Identifying freight opportunities on load boards and through broker relationships
  • Communicating with brokers by phone and email
  • Reviewing proposed rates against your operating costs
  • Reading rate confirmations carefully before accepting
  • Organizing BOLs, PODs, invoices and other paperwork
  • Planning lanes and the next load
  • Tracking insurance, authority and other required documents
  • Managing all of that while also operating the truck safely

Self-dispatch is a legitimate choice

Self-dispatching keeps every decision and every dollar of the dispatch function with you. It also builds direct broker relationships and a deep understanding of your own numbers.

The trade-off is time. Searching, calling, negotiating and handling paperwork can happen during the same hours you need for driving, rest and maintenance.

You can dispatch yourself. But you don't have to do everything yourself.

Some owner-operators keep full control of load decisions but hand off part of the administrative workload — research, broker communication, rate negotiation on proposed loads, and paperwork organization. Others start with outside support and move to self-dispatch later, or the reverse.

Whatever you choose, you remain the one who decides whether to accept a load.

Questions to help you decide

  • How many hours a week does dispatch work take you now?
  • Do you know your cost per mile and minimum acceptable rate?
  • Are paperwork delays affecting when you get paid?
  • Would outside help cost less than the time it frees up is worth to you?
